Why backhoe glass is toughened
Cabin panes are made from Toughened (Tuffen) Glass, which runs 4 to 5 times stronger than annealed glass of the same thickness. Click each stage below to see how a flat sheet becomes cabin glass.
Glass for the JCB 3DX and other backhoe loaders, sold direct by the plant.
If you're pricing JCB glass for a backhoe loader, you want a straight answer on two things. Will it fit, and what will it cost?
CLSG makes toughened cabin, door and front glass for backhoe loaders and other construction equipment at its plant in Sonepat, Haryana.
No, we're an independent glass maker that makes glass compatible with popular machines such as the JCB 3DX. JCB is a trademark of its owner, and we aren't its supplier or dealer.
Owners, rental fleets and workshops buy from us because the rate comes from the source, with no trader margin added. One message reaches the people who cut and toughen the pane.
A backhoe cab is mostly glass, and site work is hard on all of it. These are the parts operators ask us about most.
The large screen the operator looks through while loading. Quoted by machine model and size.
Door panes take the most knocks on site. Toughened, with handle and hinge holes made before heating.
Fixed side panels that give the operator a view of the bucket and the trench.
The glass facing the backhoe arm, where flying debris and dust are part of the job.
Small fixed panes, cut to the original shape from your sample or drawing.

Toughened glass can't be cut, drilled or edged after toughening, or the pane would break. That's why we ask for a sample, a drawing or the exact part reference before we quote JCB door glass.
Every hinge hole, handle cut-out and edge is finished on the flat sheet before it goes into the furnace, because nothing can be cut, drilled or edged afterward without the pane shattering.
Ask about Toughened Laminated Glass instead, two toughened panes bonded with a PVB layer so the pane holds together after a hit.
We don't publish a JCB glass price list, because a single number would mislead you. Here's what moves the rate.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Position | A front screen is larger and harder to make than a quarter light. |
| Size and shape | Bigger panes use more glass; odd shapes need more cutting. |
| Holes and cut-outs | Hinge and handle holes are made before toughening and priced from your drawing. |
| Quantity | One door pane or a fleet batch; repeat parts can get a project rate. |
| Delivery | Quoted separately from the glass, to your workshop or site. |
For a JCB 3DX glass price, send the machine model and year and a photo of the pane or its part reference.
Machine model and year, and which pane. A photo of the old glass helps.
A sample, a drawing or the part reference, with hole positions.
Glass price and delivery shown separately, excl. GST.
Ex-works Sonepat or delivered. Your fitter installs it.
Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or edged after toughening, because the pane would break.
CLSG glass processing rule
Most backhoe cabin glass is single toughened glass. Answer one question below to see which build your pane needs.
A front screen is the usual position for toughened laminated glass, two toughened panes bonded with a PVB layer, because it stays in the frame after a hit instead of falling out.
Doors, sides, rear glass and quarter lights are usually single toughened glass, which falls into small, blunt pieces if it breaks and is quoted by part.
| Point | Toughened | Toughened laminated |
|---|---|---|
| Build | One heat-treated pane | Two toughened panes + PVB |
| When broken | Small blunt pieces, pane falls out | Pieces stay on the interlayer, pane stays in the frame |
| Holes and cut-outs | Made before toughening | Made before toughening |
| Usual positions | Doors, sides, rear, quarter lights | Front screen, on request |
| Price | Quoted by part | Quoted by part |
Unsure which build your machine had? A photo of the broken pane usually tells us, since laminated glass cracks and stays put while toughened glass leaves the frame empty.

Yes. Ask for a full set and list every position you need, so we can quote the front, door, side, rear and quarter glass together.
No. CLSG makes and supplies the glass only. Your workshop or fitter installs it.
Once glass is toughened, cutting or drilling it makes the whole pane shatter. That's why we need exact sizes and hole positions before we make it.
Yes. Tuffen, tafan and tuffan are common spellings of toughened glass, which the US calls tempered glass. Our backhoe door, side and rear panes are toughened at the Sonepat plant.
Send the machine model, year and a photo or sample of the pane. If we can match the size, shape and holes, we'll quote it the same way as 3DX glass. JCB is a trademark of its owner.
