Why should roof glass be laminated, not just toughened?

Overhead glass should be toughened laminated because it stays in place if it breaks. Toughened glass, also called tempered glass, is 5× stronger than raw glass, but when it breaks it falls as more than 50 small pieces per 50 × 50mm. Overhead, those pieces drop on people below. Laminated glass bonds two toughened panes with an interlayer that holds the broken glass in the frame.

So when you search for toughened glass for a roof, what you need is toughened laminated glass.

Does a glass roof heat up, and what are the options?

A clear glass roof lets in sun and heat, so tinted or milky interlayers and reflective glass are used to cut glare. Tinted PVB softens the light, milky PVB diffuses it for privacy and less glare, and reflective glass bounces back more of the sun. All are available in toughened laminated glass on request. Ask us for the option that suits your roof and we will price it.

How do you order glass for a roof or skylight?
