Which glass for your railing?

Common market practice in India for toughened glass for balcony and staircase railings.

  • Balcony with posts or a top handrail

    Glass is infill

10mm or 12mm toughened. 12mm is the usual default.

  • Frameless balcony

Glass in a base channel, no top handrail

13.52mm toughened laminated, or 17.52mm for taller panels and higher floors.

  • Staircase

    Toughened glass for stairs

10mm with SS posts and a handrail; 12mm, or 13.52mm laminated, if frameless.

  • Terrace, rooftop, high-rise

    Open edges and high floors

    13.52–17.52mm toughened laminated.

  • Inside the home

    Mezzanine, void, overlooking a drop

    13.52mm toughened laminated.

Final thickness depends on panel height, fixing and floor level. A structural engineer should confirm it for your site.

Toughened vs toughened laminated for railings

Toughened glass, also called tempered glass, is 5× stronger than raw glass. If it does break, it breaks into small blunt pieces, more than 50 particles per 50 × 50mm, but the panel falls out of the frame.

Toughened laminated glass bonds toughened panes with an interlayer. When it breaks, the interlayer holds the pieces and the panel stays in place.

That's why laminated glass is used wherever a fall or a drop is a risk: frameless balconies, terraces, high floors and indoor voids.

Toughened glass railing FAQs

What is the price of toughened glass railing per sq ft?

Clear toughened railing glass costs ₹135–140 per sq ft in 8mm, ₹165–170 in 10mm and ₹195–200 in 12mm. Toughened laminated glass costs ₹360–365 in 13.52mm and ₹415–430 in 17.52mm. These rates are for glass only, ex-works Sonepat, excluding GST and transport.

What is the tuffen glass railing price for a balcony?

For a 10 ft balcony with 3.5 ft high glass (35 sq ft), the glass costs about ₹5,775–5,950 in 10mm and ₹6,825–7,000 in 12mm. A frameless balcony in 13.52mm toughened laminated costs about ₹12,600–12,775. These prices are for the glass only. If you want, we can also take up the fabrication and job work for your railing.

Which thickness is best for a balcony railing?

With posts or a top handrail, 10mm or 12mm toughened glass is the common choice, and 12mm is the usual default. For a frameless balcony in a base channel, use 13.52mm toughened laminated, or 17.52mm for taller panels and higher floors. A structural engineer should confirm the thickness for your site.

Toughened or laminated glass for railings?

Toughened glass works as infill between posts or under a top handrail. Where the glass is the main barrier against a fall, such as frameless balconies, terraces and high floors, choose toughened laminated glass, because the interlayer holds the broken pieces in place.

Is your railing glass BIS certified?

Yes. CLSG is certified to BIS IS 2553 Part 1 for architectural safety glass. We are also certified to Part 2 for road transport glass.

Do you also do the fabrication?

Yes, if you want it. Our prices are for the glass only, cut to size and toughened, and we can also take up the fabrication and job work for your railing. Send us your sizes and tell us what you need.

Can toughened glass be cut or drilled on site?

No. Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening. All sizes and hole positions must be final before toughening, so send us the final sizes and drawings before we toughen the glass.
